FernandoFernando Camin Medina, selected at age 24, is Deputy Director of Tourism for the Municipal Government of the Solidaridad District, in Playa del Carmen. He implements district-wide programs with numerous associations and institutions. Fernando hopes to become the Director of the municipal government’s Youth Institute. He has a BA in Systems and Information Engineering, recently opened an Information Technology business and teaches IT at a local university. Bilingual in English and Spanish, Fernando sees himself as a future political and business leader in Playa del Carmen.

Jacinta Chan Pech

Jacinta Chan Pech, who was 29 when she was selected to participate in GOJoven, is a Mayan leader who works in the Department of Social Development in Tulum, where she participates in social development activities in the city and its surrounding rural Mayan communities. Bilingual in Spanish and Mayan, Jacinta collaborates with a local Mayan association, conducting health outreach. She also works to protect the environment through volunteering at CEMAT, an organization of ecologically-minded business people, and is an active member of Mexico Nuevo, the youth arm of the PRI political party. Jacinta has a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Business Development and plans to get a master’s degree in Construction to help her community secure housing.

Wilma Esquivel Pat

Summit Fellow's PhotoWilma Esquivel Pat became a fellow at age 25.  She has taught middle school biology in Felipe Carrillo Puerto for the past two years.  Wilma feels an obligation to educate her young students about sexual and reproductive health, beyond what her school’s curriculum delineates.  She thrives on working with her students and plans to continue teaching and to acquire a Masters Degree in Education.  She recognizes that teen pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and a lack of tolerance for sexual diversity pose significant challenges to youth in Carrillo Puerto, especially in her students’ indigenous communities.  She is particularly interested in educating her students and their parents about sexual and reproductive health so that the information is reinforced at home.  She looks forward to expanding her knowledge and learning how to better mobilize her community.

Sony Marcial Erosa Villanueva

Summit Fellow's PhotoSony Marcial Erosa Villanueva became a Summit Fellow at age 27 and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Psychology.  He has been working as the academic counselor at the National Technical Professional High School (CONALEP) in Chetumal.  In his work, he addresses issues of self-esteem, sexual health and family violence, and he aims to make a difference in his students’ lives.  Sony also runs a radio program called “The Voice of Youth,” and has some very creative ideas on how to use the media to educate youth about sexual and reproductive health.  Sony is a dynamic team player with a strong commitment to youth development. He aims through GOJoven to learn more about using the media as a tool to reach youth and to help them break out of traditional gender frameworks.

Cecilia Kay Nicté Chablé Berlín

Summit Fellow's PhotoCecilia Kay Nicté Chablé Berlín, became a Summit Fellow at age 23 and is originally from Yucatán.  She is currently an educator at the Development Center of Quintana Roo, a non-profit institution in Felipe Carrillo Puerto.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Development and Education and gives workshops on gender equity to children, youth and adults in both the urban and rural areas of Carrillo Puerto.  She has experience developing youth-centered media in various forms, including web design, CD-ROMs, magazines and radio shows.  Cecilia is currently the editor of “Your Alternative Space,” a cultural gazette which has a section on sexual and reproductive health geared towards indigenous youth.  Cecilia speaks and writes Maya, and is taking advanced Maya language courses to increase her language proficiency.

Rafael Alejandro Rivero Aburto

Summit Fellow's PhotoRafael Alejandro Rivero Aburto, 23 years old upon receipt of the Summit Fellowship, is the general secretary of the Youth Assembly of Quintana Roo and president of the local chapter of a national political youth group called the Revolutionary Generation.  Both groups work to mobilize youth politically and train them in democratic participation, as well as other topics such as sports, reproductive rights and public speaking.  He is interested in forming peer education groups as a means to communicate the importance of sexual and reproductive health to other youth. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Law, Rafael already shows incredible leadership in the field of politics.  His long-term goal is to run for Congress as part of Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party.

Rodolfo Moo Chi

Fellow's photoRodolfo Moo Chi, 28 years old when he became a Summit Fellow, was the sole team member from Felipe Carrillo Puerto. He recently completed his degree in business administration.  Rodolfo’s innate leadership skills, commitment to the youth of his community, and his past experience working at the local youth and health centers illustrate his capacity to initiate change. Rodolfo recognizes that machismo, particularly in the Mayan community, can have negative reproductive health outcomes, including early and unwanted pregnancies. He hopes through the GOJoven program to begin to change attitudes regarding gender roles in Quintana Roo. Already well connected in the Mayan community, Rodolfo has long-term plans of entering politics.  Currently Rodolfo works as a Health Assistant at the Municipal Health Department in Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Fellow's photoSilvia Muñoz Monte tenía 26 años cuando se hizo Becario Summit y trabajaba como enfermera con el Departamento de Salud.   También prestaba sus servicios voluntariamente en la clínica de la Cruz Roja en Chetumal.   Durante sus seis años trabajando en la región, ha trabajado en comunidades rurales dando pláticas y talleres sobre varios temas de salud incluyendo la nutrición y sexualidad.  Reconoce la necesidad tremenda en estas comunidades para más información sobre la salud reproductiva, para poder disminuir la tasa de matrimonios jóvenes, violencia en la familia y sex sin protección.   Silvia piensa seguir aprendiendo y posiblemente entrando en la política en el futuro.  Actualmente trabaja con la clínica de la Cruz Roja en México D.F..

Fellow's photoOscar Moreno Castillo, 23-years-old upon receipt of the Summit Fellowship, is the Coordinator of Centro Interactivo Poder Joven, a youth development center sponsored by the Quintana Roo Youth Commission. In this capacity, he reaches out to young people in Chetumal, managing centers that provide teens with sports and educational opportunities to develop their own leadership potential. Interested in exploring and reconnecting with his Mayan heritage, Oscar spent the past few years working at the Poder Joven Center in Felipe Carillo Puerto before he was promoted to his current position as Coordinator of the project. He is deeply committed to working with young people and demonstrates a unique degree of maturity, confidence, and experience.  Oscar currently works as a motorcycle Sales Agent for Motopass Rent Motocicletas Vento U.S.A..

Mareni Cecilia Cortés Santiago

Fellow's photoMareni Cecilia Cortés Santiago, a 26-year-old science teacher when accepted as a Summit Fellow, works at CONALEP, the Quintana Roo branch of Mexico’s national college of professional education, which trains nursing students and others. She is completing her degree in sustainable development at El Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR), a graduate university focused on development in Mexico’s south. Cecilia’s thesis focuses on water quality in Quintana Roo and she has worked extensively in rural communities around Chetumal.  She is also president of Environmental Protection and Public Health (PAS) where she works as an educator. Her sociability and proactive nature should help her to go far in reaching her goals.
