Ana Silvia del Rosario Lopez Ixil

foto de personasAna Silvia del Rosario López Xil, an indigenous woman who works with Fundebase in the state of Chimaltenango, was 27 years old when she became a Summit Fellow. Ana Silvia is a strong and dynamic young leader who has overcome significant challenges to take on a management position with Fundebase, a large community-based organization. There, she coordinates a community health program, working with her staff to educate and train rural women on basic health, hygiene, and nutrition. She is eager to learn more about sexual and reproductive health so that she can share this information with the women in the villages where Fundebase works. Ana Silvia is currently finishing her degree in social work and is committed to continuing to work on health and development issues in indigenous communities within Guatemala.

David Efren López López

foto de personasDavid Efren López López was selected as a Summit Fellow at age 23 and is an incredibly charismatic, committed, and accomplished young leader. He has a long list of achievements and already began his own organization focused on health and education. Until recently, David worked as the Program Coordinator of Gente Nueva, an important institution in Guatemala working on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and advocacy. David lives in Guatemala City and is involved in several health, advocacy, and HIV networks in Guatemala and throughout Latin America. He is deeply committed to preventing the spread of the disease and to advocating for the rights of those who are HIV-positive. He is a powerhouse of ideas, passion, and action, dedicating his energy to creating real change in the field of HIV prevention and treatment, an area fraught with cultural taboos and political obstacles.

Ingrid Janeth Galvez Cuyon

foto de personasIngrid Yaneth Galvez Cuyún was 21 when she became a Summit Fellow and was the Program Coordinator of Proyecto LoCreo, a youth leadership development program that encourages innovative and creative approaches to sustainable development in Guatemala. When she graduated from the LoCreo program, her unique potential and leadership capacity led to her employment as a trainer and coordinator there. Ingrid also worked part-time as a teacher and has a deep commitment to youth leadership development, believing that young people represent Guatemala’s greatest hope for a better future. Thanks to the Summit Educational Scholarship, Ingrid is currently beginning her Bachelors Degree at the Universidad Rafael Landivar in Environmental Engineering.

Maynor Roberto Morales Coroxon

foto de personasRoberto Morales Coroxón, became a Summit Fellow at age 24 and is the Program Coordinator of Proyecto Payaso, a local NGO that educates rural communities throughout Guatemala about a broad range of sexual and reproductive health issues. Using performance art and other creative forms of communication Roberto and his team travel to educate people about the importance of family planning, HIV prevention and gender equity. Although he is young, Roberto is already in a key position within Proyecto Payaso, and is also a leader in his own indigenous community near Panajachel, where he works to promote knowledge of SRH issues and community development.

Ana Lourdes Del Rosario Tojin Mich

foto de personasAna Lourdes Tojen Mich tenía 25 años cuando fue seleccionada para ser una Becaria Summit y trabaja con la Asociación ALAS, una organización basada en Antigua que promueve el entrenamiento de salud sexual y reproductiva en comunidades rurales. Superando obstáculos culturales y presión comunitaria tremenda, Lourdes organizó una clínica de planificación familiar y trajo la unidad móvil de esterilización de APROFAM (un afiliado de IPPF) a su pueblo.  Logró dar a las mujeres del pueblo acceso a una larga gama de servicios de planificación familiar. Lourdes es especialmente dedicada a la empoderación de mujeres, reconociendo su importancia crítica tanto para mujeres individuales con quienes trabaja como para el desarrollo de sus comunidades a largo plazo. Lourdes espera un día ser directora de su organización.

Elvis Tillett

1Elvis Tillett became a Summit Fellow at age 26.  He is the Career Guidance and Placement Officer of the National 4-H Youth Development Center, a residential alternative adolescent and youth training institution within Youth for the Future, the Belizean Government’s Youth Department, located in Belmopan City, Belize.  Since his participation in 2004, Elvis and 4H have been working to integrate adolescent sexual and reproductive health curriculum into the Center’s Health and Life Skills Education Curriculum.  Elvis has worked with a community nurse to provide weekly sessions to over 100 youth on topics such as confidentiality, self esteem, puberty, contraceptives, STI’s, HIV/AIDS, violence/abuse, conflict resolution, drug use and drug abuse, decision making, communication, and goal setting.  For the past three years, Elvis has selected a group of 10-15 trainees to form peer support groups that he claims “are a very strong group of young people committed to voice out their needs and opinions.” Collaborating with staff from the Red Cross “Together We Can” project, Elvis will provide the peer youth group with weekly training sessions to become certified health educators and intends to fully integrate Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health content into the Center’s curriculum by September 2007.

Eva Marisol Burgos

4Eva Marisol Burgos - Eva is 27 years old, and was born in Belmopan. In 1994, she moved to the village of St. Matthews where she began to work with young people and became involved in village affairs. She served for three years in the St. Matthews village council as Treasurer, and developed various projects for the benefit of the villagers. Eva then began to work with community nurses and enrolled in a program to train as a community nurse’s aide.  While remaining actively involved as a nurse in her community, Eva now also works as the GOJoven Country Representative and as the Emergency Contraception Leadership Initiative Regional Coordinator.  She recently graduated from high school at the top of her class and has been selected as a Summit Scholar to continue her studies in the nursing program at the University of Belize this year.

Dalila Ical

3Dalila Icel, was the youngest Fellow in the 2004-2005 pool, selected at age 20. Even at her young age, she works as a reporter and news anchor for the local television station in Orange Walk, and is thus somewhat of a celebrity in her hometown. Dalila wants to use her position as a journalist and a celebrity to educate young people about teen pregnancy, women’s rights and sexuality. She recently started a youth group in Orange Walk, which currently includes about 20 young leaders. She hopes to bring knowledge of reproductive health to this group in order to spread this information more widely throughout the District.
